Product Development Operations teams set the pace of future growth
Product development operations consulting used to be off limits for most management consulting firms because clients did not want to disrupt a function that set the pace of future growth, and engineers had limited consulting budgets and preferred to work with other engineers. But this attitude is changing as companies exhaust opportunities for productivity improvements elsewhere and pursue better performance from a function that is essential to success in the marketplace and, in many sectors, a substantial contributor to costs. However, meeting these needs poses significant challenges rooted in the unique nature of R&D as a creative process that is subject to a high degree of complexity and uncertainty.
John Riggs, PwC’s Global Innovation & Corporate Venturing leader, said: “At PwC, we look to deploy our services tailored to each individual client. We review and sometimes help refine the strategic and operational objectives of our clients, and then work with global and local resources to incorporate leading practices into a performance management solution.”
The author of the report, Nathan Simon at ALM Intelligence noted that “PwC exhibits the broadest capabilities among the leaders, owing to its specialised Management Engineers and Strategy& affiliates, the operations backbone of its PRTM heritage, IT resources and partnerships, and the geographic and sector footprints of its network members. This combination pays particular dividends in streamlining and coordinating global R&D assets through a mix of infrastructure tools, role definition, governance, and cultural change.”
The report also states that PwC was best in class for ‘Operating System.’ They comment that “With its Management Engineers affiliate, operations breadth, and product lifecycle management (PLM) capabilities, PwC uniquely brings together the data-intensive information processing, engineering methods, and process improvement methodologies that make up a development operating system.
John Riggs added:
“We’re delighted to be recognised as a leader in Product Development Operations Consulting by ALM Intelligence. We strive to help all of our clients to innovate boldly and profitably, to create and deliver new and significant value. We look beneath the surface, to help our clients diagnose and solve challenging problems, so that they can break free from the pack and drive success amidst fierce competition.”
